Project co-financed by European Union (OPSYS & Contract number NDICI/AFRICA/2024/462-027)

The University of Udine (UNIUD), through its UNESCO Chair on Intersectoral Safety for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience, is a partner in the MAPS (Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa) project. This major initiative aims to inform policies and programs on migration and forced displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa by filling knowledge gaps through rigorous, policy-oriented research.

The MAPS Project: A Strategic Action for Sub-Saharan Africa

Funded by the European Union, the MAPS project brings together a consortium of European and African universities, led by Sapienza University of Rome. The main objective is to improve research and awareness of migration phenomena in the region, focusing on ten key countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, South Sudan, and South Africa.

The project is built on four fundamental activities:

  1. Analytical Research: Assessing existing knowledge gaps.
  2. Original Research: Producing new knowledge based on field-collected data.
  3. Cultural Dialogue: Creating multi-stakeholder discussion forums.
  4. Knowledge Sharing: Disseminating findings through digital platforms, publications, and conferences.

Special attention is given to the effects of disasters and climate change on migration flows and the condition of vulnerable groups such as women, children, minorities, and people with disabilities.
